Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority

Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (বাংলাদেশ অভ্যন্তরীণ নৌপরিবহন কর্তৃপক্ষ) also known as BIWTA is the authority that controls the inland water transport in Bangladesh. It's also responsible for managing the development and maintenance of the inland water transport system.

The department was first established in 1958 by the former East Pakistan government as East Pakistan Inland Water Transport Authority (EPIWTA). It was established for the overall control, management, and development of inland water transport in the entire region. This agency was introduced on October 31, 1958, with the ordinance, called the East Pakistan Inland water Transport Authority Ordinance 1958 (E.P. Ordinance, NO LXXV of 1958). Later the government-appointed three constituted authorities of this institution on November 4, 1958. After the independence of Bangladesh, this department was named Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority. Today, an appointed advisory committee advises in respect of all related development, maintenance, and operations of inland water transport and inland waterways in Bangladesh.

Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation or BIWTC is a government-owned company that owns and operates river vessels and ships; and river ports in Bangladesh and is located in Dhaka, Bangladesh.

The company was founded in 1972 after the Liberation of Bangladesh. It was placed in charge through the nationalization of East Pakistan Shipping Corporation and other private shipping corporations.
